Description

With the launch of its first watch in November 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market.

In developing its own wristwatches Casio began with the basic question, ""What is a wristwatch?"" Rather than simply making a digital version of the conventional mechanical watch, we thought that the ideal wristwatch should be something that shows all facets of time in a consistent way. Based on this, Casio was able to create a watch that displayed the precise time including the second, minute, hour, day, and month — not to mention a.m. or p.m., and the day of the week. It was the first watch in the world with a digital automatic calendar function that eliminated the need to reset the calendar due the variation in month length. Rather than using a conventional watch face and hands, a digital liquid crystal display was adopted to better show all the information. This culminated in the 1974 launch of the CASIOTRON, the world’s first digital watch with automatic calendar. The CASIOTRON won acclaim as a groundbreaking product that represented a complete departure from the conventional wristwatch.

Casio transformed the concept of the watch — from a mere timepiece to an information device for the wrist — and undertook product planning based on this innovative idea. We developed not only time functions such as global time zone watches, but also other radical new functions using Casio’s own digital technology, including calculator and dictionary functions, as well as a phonebook feature based on memory technology, and even a thermometer function using a built-in sensor. The memory-function watches became our DATA BANK product series, while the sensor watches developed into two unique Casio product lines of today: the Pathfinder series displaying altitude, atmospheric pressure, and compass readings.

In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world’s toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio’s flagship timepiece product.

Today, Casio is focusing its efforts on solar-powered radio-controlled watches: the built-in solar battery eliminates the nuisance of replacing batteries, and the radio-controlled function means users never have to reset the time. In particular, the radio-controlled function represents a revolution in time-keeping technology similar to the impact created when mechanical watches gave way to quartz technology. Through the further development of high radio-wave sensitivity, miniaturization, and improved energy efficiency, Casio continues to produce a whole range of radio-controlled models.

5I love it!  Apr 07, 2011 By D. Collins
I am a mom of 4 young kids and so I love digital watch that I can wear every day... and I mean every day, 24hrs a day. I use it to keep time of how long I breastfeed, to remind me to take my meds when I'm on antibiotics, to pick up the kids from school, etc. I've always used Timex. I love all the features it has (multiple alarms, timers, etc). But the band always cracks and breaks before the watch even runs out of battery (about 2 years). So I buy another one because it's not easy to find bands for it. Finally, after my 4th Timex and having the same issue with the band, I gave Casio a try. I love it!

This watch has pretty much the same neat features as the Timex plus it doesn't need battery. From what I read, the band doesn't have issue with cracks (though I can't tell yet since I"ve only had this watch for 4 months). I did have to read the manual because the buttons and set up are not the same as the Timex.

I haven't had issues with the battery loosing charge (I am in TX). In the middle of the night, the watch does go on stand-by where there is no display at all. So I know that if I press the light button, I have to press it twice for the display to come on. Once for it to came on, and the next to turn the light function so I can see what time it is.

The only weird thing is that the buckle on the watch is bubble gum pink. If you look at the face of the watch, it has a maroon, fuchsia color. So I wondered what the heck color coordination that was... but then I noticed that the inside of the face just outside the solar panels has the same bubble gum pink. It's hard to see it so the buckle being pink looks strange. I wish Casio just matched the face color instead.

4Love my watch  May 28, 2011 By Tiffany
It works great. I can use the light without it going in to power save mode and the face going blank.
I had read that it stops working well so I waited to write this review. I have had this watch for over three months now and it works great!
It does go into power save mode at night,( when it is in the dim and dark for a few hours.) I wish it could reserve a little more back up power so it could make it through the night.
It is water proof which I love. I have had it under a hose, in the bath, I got it muddy gardening and washed it off in the shower. No condensation build up at all. It really is water proof.
It is the perfect watch if you are active and busy. It holds up wonderfully.

5Awesome Watch!!! Love it!  Jul 25, 2011 By WebShoppuur "Vicngo"
Bought this watch for when I'm doing sporty activities. So far it has been a great accessory. I am slowly but surly figuring out all the useful functions. I love the fact that the battery recharges by solar - never have to worry about changing out the battery.

I think it's so stylish that I even wear it for casual outings. I am happy with this watch and highly recommend it!

5Great watch!  Jun 16, 2011 By Rose Madder
I am really impressed with this solar powered watch. The fact that it is solar powered sold me immediately. The band of the watch is very comfortable to wear and doesn't get overly sweaty on a hot day. Setting the time was okay, but the instructions manual that came with the watch was a little daunting. I still have not looked all the way through it yet. The functions that I need are easy to access for me and I am not sure if I will use the other features of this watch. I do wish the light of the watch was any other color but a hideous, dingy orange. Great buy for the money and I am very happy with my purchase.
