Description

This diver series is the most popular collection that Orient has to offer. A feature that makes this model into a professional diver watch is its water-resistance of up to 200 meters. This is perfect for you if you enjoy scuba diving on your vacations to Hawaii. You will notice that this watch combines the timeless design of the dial with the sporty look of the bezel to create a work of art.

This collection of diver watch is all mechanical. What this means is that it runs on the spring of the watch. When the diver watch is worn, it will automatically store power in the spring. Hence the name, automatic watches.

The dial for this watch comes with both day and date indicators located at the 3 o’clock position. The day indicator is adjusted by unscrewing the push-button, located on the 2 o’clock position, and pushing the button for the specific day. The date indicator is adjusted by the crown (time-setting piece) located on the 3 o’clock position.

This watch has a two-level crown which adjusts both the time and the date. The 1st level corresponds to the time while the 2nd level corresponds to the date. To adjust either level, you must first loosen the screw-down crown. The purpose of a screw-down crown is so that water does not enter the case. Not only does the crown have shoulders for added protection, but it also has the official orient logo engraved on the crown.

Another attribute that adds to the value of this watch is its unidirectional bezel. The purpose of this feature is so that you can adjust the time bezel to the minute hand to see how many minutes have gone by. The time hands, as well as the hour indicators, are both luminescent. This allows for the owner to view the time during the evening.

The band for this series comes in either stainless steel metal or black urethane. In the metal band variation, the links come in matte finish. You will notice the double-locking clasp and how it gives added protection so that the watch does not come off inadvertently. Unlike the metal band, the urethane variation comes in a deployment clasp.

Since this collection is so popular, Orient offers a total of 8 variations to this watch: 4 with metal bands and 4 with urethane bands. Within the metal bands, there are different dial and bezel colors: black dial on black bezel, blue dial on blue bezel, blue dial on blue/orange bezel, and orange dial on black bezel. Likewise, the urethane band variation has different dial and bezel colors: black dial on black bezel, blue dial on blue/orange bezel, blue dial on blue bezel, and orange dial on black bezel.

4buy this watch  Dec 02, 2009 By sirweldsalot
if anyone can save the mechanical watch world, it will be the folks from orient. i cant find a flaw. ok i can find one...the little blue picture on the strap looks kinda cheesy. i like the extra pusher for the day and both the pusher and the crown screw down so, neither one should leak and the pusher wont activate if you bump it. its a neat little add on. the crystal is mineral (plain old glass) and it will scratch as such. no biggie. accuracy is within 5 seconds per day. thats very good. you can tell that orient is serious about building good movements! i have bought two orients from amazon and i cant find a flaw in either one and ive been collecting watches for quite a while. i know whats out there. if your on the fence jump over to this side.
i came back to edit this page to take a star away. i had to get a case seal from them and they blew me off for months. still love the watch but they need to tighten up on customer service.

4Nice Automatic (self-winding) Watch  Aug 10, 2009 By dnhoshor
The Orient CEM65003D is another variation in the large, and popular, automatic day/date diver watch collection by Orient. I bought this model with the rubber strap, because I like to be able to easily adjust the fit of the watch on my wrist. The Orient band is okay, but I found it a little stiff, and replaced it with a 22mm woven nylon band. The original band was pretty long, and would easily fit over a wet suit - if I was a deep sea diver. (I'm a desk-bound computer weenie.)

I've been pleased with the accuracy of the CEM65003D. After a month of wear, I've found that mine's accurate to within about a minute a week. Mine runs slow. I set the time a minute ahead, and when the watch is a minute behind, a little more than two weeks later, I set it ahead again. In this way, I know that my watch is within a minute of the correct time. If you want a really accurate watch, you're probably ahead getting a quartz model, but there's something about a mechanical movement that appeals many watch wearers.

The controls of the CEM65003D are a bit odd. The watch has a screw-down crown, and a screw-down locking ring around the pusher button. The pusher button does nothing but advance the day name of the day/date display. Unlike most day/date watches sold in the United States, the day name abbreviations aren't bilingual. The day name advances two notches for each day, so they could be bilingual, but instead, the second day name is repeated in English with the day number after each - e.g. Mon1, Tue2, etc.

The CEM65003D is sometimes called the "Pepsi" model, because the rotating bezel is blue and red, and reminds users of a Pepse bottle cap. I just like the little flash of color. By the way, the dial is beautiful, with a deep blue dial that appears to be glazed, and nicely finished luminescent hour markers, and easily read hands

4Nice automatic watch for the money  Sep 16, 2010 By Falconeer "John B"
This is my first Orient watch, and I'm getting used to some of the idiosyncracies of the timepiece such as Non-hacking second hand, separate button for setting days of the week, no crown winding mechanism. However, it seems to work flawlessly, keeps reasonable time for an automatic, comes in one of the nicest watch boxes this side of Omega, has a very visible and readable face, the numbers and hands luminates quite well in the dark, and the band is very long to accomodate wearing the watch over a wet suit. I'm also just getting used to the looks of the "Pepsi" bezel, but it has a great function in that the initial 15 minutes are much easier to read, since they are in red. Great in low light, underwater applications. Like any other new watch, the bezel turns a bit stiffly at first, but I anticipate it will turn more easily after a little breaking in period.

This is an attractive casual/diving watch for weekend wear at the beach or lake and is a great buy at less than $100.00. My favorite everyday wear watch continues to be my trusty Bulova 98C62 Marine Star quartz.

Amazon one-day shipping was right on as usual.

5Excellent mechanical, great value  Feb 22, 2012 By Stephen H. Greene
Solidly built and attractive, this watch loses less than a minute a week in over four months. Orient's mechanical movements are so innovative that Seiko bought the company! Dive bezel is fully functional, with a precise click action.

Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a precise mechanical watch.

5So Far, So Awesome  Feb 08, 2012 By S. Lord "lord_sag"
After ordering a Tag Heuer Carrera I became hooked on the idea of automatic watches. I did a quick Google of 'automatic watches under $500' and the Orient 'Black Mako' was listed by the reviewer as "the shockingly well-kept secret". The CEM65003D model is not the Black (or Blue) Mako, but it is essentially the same watch. If you look at the descriptions of the Black Mako and this watch, they are identical. So the key questions would be: what are you going to use the watch for, and how high are your expectations for the performance (scratch resistance of the crystal et al). For $93 as of the time of this posting, I don't think you can go wrong. The site mentioned above lists an Invicta Pro Diver model that is less expensive than this model, so you are not buying the cheapest of the cheap. However, after a few weeks of ownership I can say that this is an excellent value, a classic style (OK, so Orient is known for emulating other much more expensive designs) and terrific utility. The blue face is stunning, the bezel adds additional visual interest and the lume is long lasting. The urethane band is a little different than other watches I own because of the contours near the dial, and it takes a little getting used to, but you can always choose another non-bracelet band to make it your own. The bezel is a little firm to rotate at the outset but I assume that will ease over time. I have worked out while wearing this watch, and the crowns are solid when screwed down, so I have no concerns about swimming or athletics with it. Nicely done, Orient!
